With the 2011 regular season freshly over it is time to go back and evaluate every team’s draft classes based on performance this year. I will use a formula to grade each pick and calculuate a final grade for each team. The Washington Redskins get thoroughly examined today.
ROUND 1 – graded from a 0-5 scale
ROUND 2 – graded from a 0-4 scale
ROUND 3 – graded from a 0-3 scale
ROUND 4 – graded from a 0-2 scale
ROUND 5 – graded from a 0-1 scale
ROUND 6 & 7 – no scale, point awarded if player was productive
*I reserve the right to award a bonus point to any player who outperformed their draft position.*
FINAL GRADING SCALE
90-100 – A
80-89 - B
70-79 - C
60 – 69 - D
0-59 - F

2011 Draft Class
Round 1: Ryan Kerrigan OLB, Purdue – 65 Tackles, 7.5 Sacks, 4 Forced Fumbles, 1 INT
Analysis: Kerrigan was a 16 game starter for the Skins and was a playmaker from day one. He definitely outplayed expectations this season.
Grade: 6/5
Round 2: Jarvis Jenkis DE, Clemson – No Stats
Analysis: Jenkins was hurt in the preseason and was placed on I.R.
Grade: 0/2 (reduced scale due to injury)
Round 3: Leonard Hankerson WR, Miami - 13 Receptions, 163 Yds
Analysis: Hankerson struggled with drops early in the season but then turned it on and was finding his groove until he was injured and lost for the season.
Grade: 1/2
Round 4: Roy Helu RB, Nebraska - 640 Rushing Yds, 2 TDs, 49 Receptions, 379 Yds, 1 TD
Analysis: Helu earned the starting gig halfway through the season and played very well. He showed good hands out of the backfield and ran with power and vision. He should be the teams 2012 opening day starter unless a certain back falls to them on draft day.
Grade: 2.5/2
Round 5: DeJon Gomes DB, Nebraksa – 35 Tackles
Analysis: Gomes made five starts and was in on 35 tackles. Not too shabby for a fifth rounder.
Grade: .5/1
Round 5: Niles Paul WR, Nebraska - 2 Receptions, 25 yds.
Analysis: Paul did start a couple games but couldn’t make an impact even with the Skins receiving corp being decimated by injuries.
Grade: 0/1
Round 6: Evan Royster RB, Penn St. – 328 Rushing Yds, 9 Receptions, 68 yds
Analysis: Royster came on late in the year and showed ability as a tough between the tackles runner. He should see his workload increase expotentially next season.
Grade: .5/0
Round 6: Aldrick Robinson WR, Southern Methodist – No Stats
Analysis: Made the team but didn’t contribute this season.
Grade:0/0
Round 7: Brandyn Thompson DB, Boise St. – 2 Tackles
Analysis: Thompson appeared in a handful of games but not enough to earn any pointage.
Grade: 0/0
Round 7: Maurice Hurt G, Florida – 8 Starts
Analysis: Hurt started 8 games for the Skins this year, not sure how he graded out, but that’s good value for a late pick.
Grade: 1/0
Round 7: Markus White LB, Florida St. – No Stats
Analysis: Didn’t play this season so no points awarded.
Grade: 0/0
Round 7: Chris Neild DT, West Virginia – 10 Tackles, 2 Sacks
Analysis: This very late pick appeared in all 16 games and even had a multisack game.
Grade: 1/0
TOTAL SCORE: 12.5/ 13
FINAL GRADE: 96% A
Analysis: The Redskins found some really nice players in this draft. They moved down and landed a Pro Bowl caliber player in Ryan Kerrigan. Fourth rounder Roy Helu could very well be their starting running back in 2012 and WR Leonard Hankerson should also start assuming he’s healthy. They got some late seventh round value in Neild and Hurt and also got another good back in 6th rounder Evan Royster. They still don’t know what they have in second rounder Jarvis Jenkins, but this class should only get better in time.
