Draft Grade A Day: San Diego Chargers

With the 2011 regular season freshly over it is time to go back and evaluate every team’s draft classes based on performance this year.  I will use a formula to grade each pick and calculuate a final grade for each team. The San Deigo Super Chargers get looked over on this lovely Wednesday.

ROUND 1 – graded from a 0-5 scale
ROUND 2 – graded from a 0-4 scale
ROUND 3  – graded from a 0-3 scale
ROUND 4 – graded from a 0-2 scale
ROUND 5 – graded from a 0-1 scale
ROUND 6 & 7 – no scale, point awarded if player was productive
*I reserve the right to award a bonus point to any player who outperformed their draft position.*

FINAL GRADING SCALE

90-100 – A
80-89 -    B
70-79 -   C
60 – 69 -  D
0-59 -       F

2011 Draft Class

Round 1:  Corey Liuget DE, Illionis – 19 Tackles, 1 Sack, 1 Forced Fumble
Analysis: Most draft experts envisioned Liuget as a 4-3 tackle so it was a bit surprising that the Chargers took him and put him at the 5 technique in their 3-4. He didn’t put up eye popping numbers, but 3-4 ends don’t always do.  He did start 13 games for the team so they got some value from their first pick.
Grade: 3.5/5

Round 2: Marcus Gilchrist S, Clemson - 34 Tackles, 2 INTs
Analysis:  Gilchrist did fairly well his rookie season.  He ended up starting 4 games and came away with a couple picks and over 30 tackles.
Grade: 3/4

Round 2: Jonas Mouton LB, Michigan - No Stats
Analysis: Mouton hurt his shoulder late in the preseason and was  placed on I.R. after week 2.
Grade: 0/2 (scale reduced due to injury)

Round 3: Vincent Brown WR, San Diego St. - 19 Receptions, 329 Receiving Yds, 2 TDs
Analysis:  Brown burst onto the scene with a couple big games in the middle of th season then fizzled out as it wore on.  He should be in line for increased playing time in year two.
Grade: 2/3

Round 3: Shareece Wright CB, USC – 4 Tackles
Analysis: Wright appeared in 7 games and made 4 tackles.  That is not worthy of a third round pick.
Grade: .25/3

Round 6:  Jordan Todman RB, UCONN – No stats
Analysis: Was cut by the Bolts, now rocks Minnesota purple.
Grade: 0/0

Round 6: Stephen Schilling OT, Michigan - 2 Games Started
Analysis: Schilling appeared in 9 games for the Chargers and started two of them.  That’s decent for a 6th rounder.
Grade: .5/0

Round 7:  Andrew Gachikar LB, Mizzou – 15 Tackles
Analysis: Gachkar appeared in all 16 games and made nearly a tackle a game.
Grade:.25/0

TOTAL SCORE:  9.5/ 17
FINAL GRADE: 56%   F

Analysis:   The Chargers get a failing grade mostly because of the Mouton and Wright selections.  Mouton was a surprise second rounder who was injured so the jury is still out on him, and Wright couldn’t get much  playing time.  Liuget was okay during his rookie year and will be a starter next season.  Gilchrist and Brown both showed promise and Stephen Schilling looks like a steal in round 6.  I would expect this grade to go up after years two and three but on a whole this class looks to be an average one at best.
