Draft Grade A Day: New York Giants

With the 2011 regular season freshly over it is time to go back and evaluate every team’s draft classes based on performance this year.  I will use a formula to grade each pick and calculuate a final grade for each team. The NFC Champions are up today.

ROUND 1 – graded from a 0-5 scale
ROUND 2 – graded from a 0-4 scale
ROUND 3  – graded from a 0-3 scale
ROUND 4 – graded from a 0-2 scale
ROUND 5 – graded from a 0-1 scale
ROUND 6 & 7 – no scale, point awarded if player was productive
*I reserve the right to award a bonus point to any player who outperformed their draft position.*

FINAL GRADING SCALE

90-100 – A
80-89 -    B
70-79 -   C
60 – 69 -  D
0-59 -       F

2011 Draft Class

Round 1:  Prince Amukamara CB, Nebraska – 14 Tackles, 1 INT
Analysis: Amukamara missed a large portion of the season due to an injury suffered in camp.  He ended up appearing in only 7 games and made a minimal impact.
Grade: 2/4 (Scale reduced due to injury)

Round 2: Marvin Austin DT, UNC - No stats
Analysis: Austin tore his pec in the preseason and was placed on I.R.
Grade: 0/2 (scale reduced due to injury)

Round 3: Jerel Jernigan WR, Troy - No Stats
Analysis: Jernigan made his first catch in the NFC Title game but did little to help the team during the regular season, besides returning a few kicks.
Grade: 0/3

Round 4: James Brewer OT, Indiana - No stats
Analysis: Brewer did not playing in any games in 2011.
Grade: 0/2

Round 6: Greg Jones LB, Michigan St. – 31 Tackles
Analysis: Jones started 5 games for the Giants and appeared in all 16.  Fair value for a 6th rounder.
Grade: 1/0

Round 6:  Tyler Sash S, Iowa – 17 Tackles, 1 Forced Fumble
Analysis:  Sash appeared in every game and was mildly productive.
Grade: 0.5/0

Round 6:  Jacquain Williams LB, South Florida – 78 Tackles, 1 Sack
Analysis: - Williams starting accumulating playing time right around mid season and his superb play sparked this Giants defense to get out of their funk.  He vastly outplayed his draft position and was one of the biggest steals of last year’s draft.
Grade: 2/0

Round 7: Da’Rel Scott RB, Maryland – 16 Rushing Yds, 2 Receptions, 13 Yds
Analysis:
Scott got a little playing time (appeared in 11 games) and even scored on a fake punt, so he gets a little love here.
Grade:  .25/0

TOTAL SCORE:  5.75/11
FINAL GRADE: 52%  F

Analysis:   If you take Jacquain Williams out of the equation, the Giants got very little out of their 2011 Draft Class in year one.  Injuries were a big part of that.  Amukamara missed half the season, and Marvin Austin mised all of it.  Both should compete for starting spots next season.  Jerrell Jernigan was buried on the depth chart in 2011 but with Manningham likley gone next season, he should be more involved in the offense.  If this class comes back healthy next year, I could see the grade rising a ton, maybe more than any other class from last year’s draft.
