Mid Season NFL Rookie Awards

Offensive and Defensive Rookie Awards

With the NFL season officially half over, it is time to reflect on how some of the top and not so top NFL rookies are performing. Although it is still much to early to consider any of the rookies a boom or bust player, it is well worth the time to check in and see how some of the rooks are performing.

Midseason Offensive Rookie of the YearCam Newton, QB Panthers
The number 1 overall pick is proving to be panning out quite well. Although Newton had many question marks on how he would fair in the NFL, he is showing the poise and ability to be a future star.

Midseason Defensive Rookie of the Year – Aldon Smith LB, 49ers
This is a much tougher call. Many rookie defenders are showing they can handle playing with the big boys. But when push comes to shove i’m gonna give the edge to Smith and his 6.5 sacks at the midway point.

Midseason Offensive Surprise Rookie of the Year – Doug Baldwin WR, Seahawks
This undrafted wide receiver has been a leader on the Seahawks offense since day 1. Baldwin already has over 400 yards and 2 TDs. Ranking only behind Bengals star rookie AJ Green.

Midseason Defensive Surprise Rookie of the Year – Jacquain Williams LB, Giants
Williams was a 6th round pick out of South Florida, and is currently leading all rookies in tackles. Not only leading the team in tackles but looks to be a long-term solution at linebacker for the G men.

Midseason Offensive Rookie Disappointment of the year – Derek Sherrod OT, Packers
Has has a tough time getting on the field. Failed to impress anyone during preseason. Has seem time lately but will need to step up his game the 2nd half of the season.

Midseason Defensive Rookie Disappointment of the year – Robert Quinn DE, Rams
Quinn still has plenty of potential to be a star in the NFL. But through his first half of his rookie season he hasn’t overly impressed anyone. He does have 1 sack (uncontested). Also has flashed on special teams, but the Rams didn’t draft him to be a special teams ace.
