NFL DraftSeason » NFL Draft News Fri, 04 May 2012 21:34:12 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.2.1 Post Draft Depression /nfl-draft-news/post-draft-depression/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=post-draft-depression /nfl-draft-news/post-draft-depression/#comments Mon, 30 Apr 2012 16:43:32 +0000 Nik Edlund /?p=3114 For all fans of the NFL Draft the end of April is a time of  jubilation.  It is on this fateful weekend that all the speculation comes to an end, and the mystery that is the draft is unveiled. But beneath the drama and the excitement of each pick there is something dark that lays brewing deep within us all.  For some of us it may rear its ugly head shortly after the first pick of the draft is made. For others it may be after the first round or the end of the second day. And for a fateful few it may not set in until after Mr. Irrelevant has been drafted. What is this evil menace?  It’s called Post Draft Depression or
P.D.D.    It is that shallow empty feeling that we get after the draft. It is the painful reminder that we will have to wait another 365 days for the commissioner to come out again. It is the stone cold truth of the fact that there will be no more mock drafts to look at, no more speculation on the local radio or at the workplace, for the draft has ended and we are shrouded in darkness.

But there are some things one can do to battle P.D.D.

-Draft Grades:
On Saturday evening or early Sunday after the draft, there are an abundance of sites that offer draft grades. Kiper always has his out right away, and you can find others on almost any draft site. This will give the sufferer of P.D.D. a good week or two of debate among his peers about who had the best and worst drafts.

-Track the Undrafted free agents:
Every year some good players go undrafted, and teams scurry about to sign them.   This is almost like an additional round or two if you follow it close enough.  A good site to monitor these signings is
kffl.com or the transaction portion of the sports section in a major newspaper.

- Find a Replacement Draft:
The Major League Baseball draft is now being aired in early June on ESPN2, and the NBA Draft is held at the end of June, and the NHL Draft is somewhere in there too. Though these aren’t as good as the NFL Draft there is still that thrill of uncertainty before each pick is announced that may briefly subside the craving of draft drama that sufferers of P.D.D. long for.

- Join Fantasy Football:
I would assume most draftniks are already established fantasy football players but if not join a league.  There are many fantasy sites that have fantasy mock drafts and a sufferer of P.D.D. will take comfort in reading them.  One can also play the part of a G.M. when their league holds its draft. It will be the closest any of us get to the real thing.

- Look for an early 2013 Mock Draft:
It’s never too early for draft sites to put up a mock for next year’s draft. Though they are completely and utterly useless, it will whet the appetite of the hungry draftnik who is suffering from P.D.D.

- Get a girlfriend:
Most girlfriends are completely useless on draft weekend, but they will soon become useful again.  Going to movies, taking walks, and heavy petting will help put the long wait for next year’s draft in the back of your mind.

Post Draft Depression is a very real and rapidly increasing
epidemic among us.  For some of us the Sunday
after the draft can be one of the lowest points of the year.  But sufferers of P.D.D. must realize they are
not alone. If they follow the advice above they will find that September will
be here sooner than they think, and a new football season will start, and with it, the speculation for next year’s draft.

Round 1 Recap /nfl-draft-news/round-1-recap/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=round-1-recap /nfl-draft-news/round-1-recap/#comments Fri, 27 Apr 2012 03:25:34 +0000 Nik Edlund /?p=2997 Here’s a quick review of round 1, listing some surprises, best values, and biggest reaches.

BIGGEST SURPRISE
This has to go to Bruce Irvin OLB, at 15 to the Seahawks.  Yes Irvin is an expolosive pass rusher but was seen as a better fit in a 3-4 and has some off the field issues.

BEST VALUE
The Steelers got a great value when they found Stanford guard David DeCastro available to them with the 24th overall pick.  DeCastro was considered by many to be a top 15 pick but slipped to the Steelers who gladly snapped him up.

BIGGEST REACH
Brandon Weeden QB, Oklahoma St.
Not sure the Brown really had to go with Weeden here.  I didn’t see another team between now an 37 that would take the aged passer.  They could still have gotten him and could have gotten a receiver here like Stephen Hill or Rueben Randle.

BEST START
New England gets a mention with Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower but this goes to the Minnesota Vikings.  Spielman finagled the Browns to give them 3 extra picks and then took Matt Kalil at four. They then got agressive and moved up to address their biggest need in safety by grabbing Notre Dame’s Harrison Smith.

BEST STILL AVAILABLE
WR Stephen Hill, WR Rueben Randle, C Peter Konz, DT Jerel Worthy, G Cordy Glenn, OT Jonathan Martin, CB Janoris Jenkins, TE Coby Fleener, DE/OLB Andre Branch, DT Devon Still

Plan of Attack for the 2012 NFL Draft: Indianapolis Colts /nfl-draft-news/plan-of-attack-for-the-2012-nfl-draft-indianapolis-colts/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=plan-of-attack-for-the-2012-nfl-draft-indianapolis-colts /nfl-draft-news/plan-of-attack-for-the-2012-nfl-draft-indianapolis-colts/#comments Wed, 25 Apr 2012 14:29:13 +0000 Nik Edlund /?p=3065 Free agency is waning down and the Draft is just hours away.  It’s time to sit down and go over every teams free agent acquisitions and losses, along with their team needs.   Using that information  we will figure out a Plan of Attack for the 2012 Draft for each team.  We’ll start with the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants and work our way down one day at a time, to the Indianapolis Colts and the first overall pick.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

Team Needs:  QB, WR, TE, OLB, DE, CB, S, G, DT

Free Agent Additions: WR Donnie Avery, G Mike McGlynn, DT Brandon McKinney, TE Kyle Miller, S Tom Zibikowski

Free Agent Losses:  DE Jamaal Anderson, DB Stevie Brown, FB Jerome Felton, WR Pierre Garcon, WR Anthony Gonzalez, CB Jacob Lacey, QB Peyton Manning, DT Daniel Muir, OT Quinn Ojinnaka, QB Dan Orlovsky, QB Curtis Painter

Round 1:
Potential Targets:
QB Andrew Luck

  Round 2:
Potential Targets:
TE Coby Fleener, WR Stephen Hill, WR Rueben Randle, OLB Lavonte David, DT Devon Still, DT Kendall Reyes, DT Jerel Worthy, OLB Andre Branch, NT Brandon Thompson, S Harrison Smith, CB Janoris Jenkins, CB Josh Robinson

 Round 3:
Potential Targets:
TE Dwayne Allen, WR AJ Jenkins, WR Ryan Broyles, WR Joe “The Jet” Adams, WR Mohamed Sanu, WR Nick Toon, OLB Ronnell Lewis, NT Josh Chapman, NT Mike Martin, OLB Bruce Irvin, CB Jayron Hosley, CB Dwight Bentley, CB Chase Minnifield, S Antonio Allen, S Brandon Taylor, S Markelle Martin, DE Derek Wolfe, DE Jared Crick

Plan of Attack: The Colts have already made their pick and it’s QB Andrew Luck from Stanford.  Luck is the best QB prospect to come out since Peyton Manning, so it’s obviously a wise choice.  He’s got great athleticism and mobility, and his arm strength is above average.  What separates him from most prospects is his intelligence.  He has been playing in pro-style system for years, and can read defenses and audible at the line.  He is able to check out of bad plays and into good ones and you just don’t see that in most rookie QBs.  He’ll likley struggle in year one as the team around him is terrible, but over time he’ll become one of the better QBs in the league.

In round 2, the Colts could go many ways but one option would be to find some help for their new QB.  They would love to add a receiver like Stephen Hill if he falls, or possibly LSU’s Rueben Randle.  Both of these guys are big and have great speed, and would surely help Luck’s transition to the NFL.  Another viable option would be to take Luck’s favorite target from his college days, in TE Coby Fleener.  Fleener is a great pass catching TE, but his substandard blocking could send him to the second round.  He already has a rapport with Luck and would be his safety net.  The team could also go defense here and is switching to a 3-4, so it would be interested in a nose tackle like Brandon Thompson or a pass rusher like Andre Branch, as they currently lack players for this transition.

In round 3 the Colts will likely go defense and take the highest rated defensive player on the board.  That could be a safety like Brandon Taylor, a defensive end like Jared Crick or Derek Wolfe,  or maybe even a corner like Jayron Hosley.  Any of these guys fill huge needs and would probably even start in their rookie years.  The Colts have so many needs they really can’t mess this draft up.  They just need to keep taking the highest rated players available, as this rebuilding process could take a few years.

Plan of Attack for the 2012 NFL Draft: St. Louis Rams /nfl-draft-news/plan-of-attack-for-the-2012-nfl-draft-st-louis-rams/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=plan-of-attack-for-the-2012-nfl-draft-st-louis-rams /nfl-draft-news/plan-of-attack-for-the-2012-nfl-draft-st-louis-rams/#comments Tue, 24 Apr 2012 18:19:21 +0000 Nik Edlund /?p=3063 Free agency is waning down and the Draft is just hours away.

ST. LOUIS RAMS

Team Needs:  WR, DT, RB, CB, OT, LB, S

Free Agent Additions: QB Kellen Clemens, OLB Jo-Lonn Dunbar, CB Cortland Finnegan, DE William Hayes, DE Kendall Langford, DT Trevor Laws

Free Agent Losses: DT Justin Bannan, DB Mikail Baker, CB Ron Bartell, G Jacob Bell, OLB Chris Chamberlain, P Donnie Jones, OLB Bryan Kehl

 Round 1:
Potential Targets:
OT Matt Kalil, CB Morris Claiborne, WR Justin Blackmon, RB Trent Richardson, DT Fletcher Cox

 Round 2:
Potential Targets:
DT Devon Still, DT Kendall Reyes, DT Jerel Worthy, DT Brandon Thompson, OT Bobby Massie, OT Mike Adams, LB Lavonte David, CB Janoris Jenkins, CB Josh Robinson, WR Rueben Randle, WR Stephen Hill, WR Alshon Jeffrey, S Harrison Smith, RB Doug Martin, RB David Wilson, RB Lamar Miller

 Round 3:
Potential Targets:
DT Derek Wolfe, DT Alameda Ta’Amu RB LaMichael James, OLB Terell Manning, OLB Zach Brown, OLB Bobby Wagner, CB Dwight Bentley, CB Jayron Hosley, CB Trumaine Johnson, CB Brandon Boykin, OT Mitchell Schwartz, S Antonio Allen, S Markelle Martin

Plan of Attack: The Rams enter the 2012 NFL Draft with a ton of needs and with 4 picks in the top 66 should be able to bring in some starters for the upcoming season.  They already enter this draft as winners having acquired a king’s ransom from the Reskins so they could move up and get RG3.  They now sit at the sixth spot and will take the best player who falls to them.  The most likely guy they’ll see there is Oklahoma St. WR Justin Blackmon.  The team needs to find quality weapons for Sam Bradford to throw to and Blackmon is the best in the draft this year.  He is a big  physical target who is great after the catch.  He’d be the go to guy for Bradford.  If  Blackmon is gone, and the Vikings moronicaly pass on Kalil, they could take him and along with Rodger Saffold, have one of the better young lines in the league.

The Rams have two early picks in round 2 and will look for first round talents that have fallen through the cracks.  The Rams have needs everywhere so basically any position is a possibility.  They could find real good value at defensive tackle with  guys like Jerel Worthy, Kendall Reyes, or Devon Still being available.  They may also find Lavonte David who is one of the better 4-3 linebackers in this draft around, or they could go secondary and look at a safety like Harrison Smith or a corner like Janoris Jenkins.  If they don’t get Blackmon in the first, they could go with Stephen Hill if he falls, or LSU’s Rueben Randle.  The team could also be interested in a running back as Steven Jackson is approaching 30 and has a bunch of miles on his legs.  Doug Martin, David Wilson, and Lamar Miller could all get long second round looks.

Assuming the Rams go WR, DT, and LB then they may look to beef up their offensive line in the third.  They could go with a tackle like CAL’s Mitchell Schwartz or maybe go with a swing man like James Brown from Troy or Jeff Allen from Illinois if he trickles down to the third.  They could also address their secondary with a safety like Antonio Allen or a corner like Jayron Hosley.  The Rams may go with a back here as well if they’ve yet to land one, and could choose between LaMichael James, Chris Polk, or Isaiah Pead.

Free Agent Additions:  WR Devin Aromashodu (resigned), CB Zack Bowman, TE John Carlson, CB Chris Carr, NT Fred Evans (resigned), FB Jerome Felton, DT Letroy Guion, OLB Erin Henderson (resigned), FB Lex Hilliard, OLB Marvin Mitchell,

Free Agent Losses:  CB Cedric Griffin, G Steve Hutchinson, S Tyrell Johnson, OLB Kenny Onatolu

Round 1:
Potential Targets:
OT Matt Kalil, CB Morris Claiborne, WR Justin Blackmon

Round 2:
Potential Targets:
S Harrison Smith, WR Stephen Hill, WR Ruben Randle, WR Alshon Jeffrey, WR Brian Quick, WR AJ Jenkins, CB Janoris Jenkins, CB Josh Robinson, DT Devon Still, DT Brandon Thompson, DT Kendall Reyes, OLB Lavonte David

 Round 3:
Potential Targets:
S Brandon Taylor, S Antonio Allen, CB/S Chase Minnifield, CB Jayron Hosley, CB Trumaine Johnson, CB Dwight Bentley, WR Marvin McNutt, WR Ryan Broyles, WR Nick Toon, WR Chris Givens

Plan of Attack:  The Minnesota Vikings hold the third pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and while they are currently sending out signals against it, OT Matt Kalil from USC should be the pick.  Kalil is a big dancing bear at left tackle.  He has a great drive and fights defenders until the whistle.  He comes from good bloodlines and is a potential 10 year starter and mulitple Pro Bowler.  He is the only left tackle in this draft that one can say that about.  If the Vikings take Kalil they will upgrade not just one position but three.   Kalil would start at left tackle, kicking Charlie Johnson inside to guard.  That upgrades the entire left side of the line.  The added protection would give second year QB Christian Ponder more time to throw, in turn making him better.  It’s basically a no brainer type of pick, so that is why its odd we are hearing rumors they want to trade down or would take CB Morris Claiborne or WR Justin Blackmon here.  It’s not that those two players aren’t worthy of the no. 3 overall pick, it’s that the corner and receiver class is so deep the Vikings should be able to find a starter or contributor later in the draft.

After taking Kalil in round 1, the Vikes will have two targets in mind for pick 35, S Harrison Smith from Notre Dame or WR Rueben Randle from LSU.  They have arguably the worst group of safeties in the league and Smith would be a 16 game starter in his rookie season.  He is nearly 6’2, very smart and instinctive and has the speed to cover.  He is a great tackler but his ball skills are just average.  The other route the Vikings could go would be to take LSU Rueben Randle.  Randle is a tall lanky receiver with good vertical speed.  He’d have much better numbers coming out of college if he would have had a decent QB to throw him the ball.  They need to get Ponder weapons and Randle would be the best pass catcher they could hope for in round 2, assuming Stephen Hill doesn’t fall.  If both Randle and Smith are gone, the Vikings should just take the highest player on the board and could find DT Devon Still or Kendall Reyes avaialble, or maybe even LB Lavonte David.

In round 3 the Vikings will address their secondary if they missed out on Smith in round 2, or a reciver if they didn’t land Randle.  Some defensive backs that could catch their eye would be safeties Antonio Allen or Brandon Taylor, and corners Jayron Hosley from Va Tech, Chase Minnifield from Virginia, or Dwight Bentley from Louisiana Lafayette.  Hosley is especially intriguing as he is a ball hawk.  The Vikings went about 10 games last year without a single interception.  Hosley had 10 alone his junior year.  He’d give the Vikings secondary the big play ability they’ve lacked.  If the Vikings do get Harrison Smith in round 2, corner would still be in play, but it’s likely they’d look for a WR to help Ponder’s development.  They want one with size and vertical speed, and could look at Iowa’s Marvin McNutt, or Wisconsin’s Nick Toon.

CLEVELAND BROWNS

Team Needs:  RB, WR, QB, OT, DE

Free Agent Additions: OT Oneil Cousins (resigned), WR Jordan Norwood (resigned), DE Juqua Parker, CB Dimitir Patterson (resigned), DE Frostee Rucker, NT Brian Schaefering (resigned), TE Alex Smith (resigned),

Free Agent Losses:  CB DeAngelo Smith, OT Steve Vallos, RB Peyton Hillis, OT Artis Hicks, FS Mike Adams

Round 1:
Potential Targets:
RB Trent Richardson, CB Morris Claiborne, OT Matt Kalil, WR Justin Blackmon, QB Ryan Tannehill, WR Stephen Hill, WR Kendall Wright, WR Michael Floyd, OT Jonathan Martin, DE Whitney Mercilus, DE Nick Perry, DE Chandler Jones

Round 2:
Potential Targets:
QB Brandon Weeden, QB Kirk Cousins, DE Vinny Curry, OT Bobby Massie, OT Zebrie Sanders,  WR Rueben Randle, WR Alshon Jeffrey

Round 3:
Potential Targets:
OT Donald Stephenson, G James Brown, OT Mitchell Schwartz, G Jeff Allen, DE Jared Crick, DE Tyrone Crawford, DE Cam Johnson, WR Ryan Broyles, WR Marvin McNutt, WR Keshawn Martin

Plan of Attack:  The Browns hold the fourth overall pick and will look to find an explosive playmaker on offense with it.  They could consider WR Justin Blackmon from Oklahoma St., but the smart money is on RB Trent Richardson from Alabama.  Alabama is a rare three down back with great explosion and toughness.  He is an excellent pass catcher out of the backfield and gives the Browns a weapon unlike anything they’ve had before.  There has been some talk the Browns could take Ryan Tannehill at 4, but that would be a big reach and reeks of desperation.  They need to just grab the best player available and that will be Richardson.  With their second first round pick, no. 22 overall, the team should once again look for an offensive weapon and this time target a receiver.  Kendall Wright or Stephen Hill would be the two likely choices. Both of these guys are extremely fast but that is where the comparisons end.  Hill is a bigger receiver who will be a great vertical threat, but needs more work on his route running.  Wright can run every route imaginable and is quick as a cat, but doesn’t have Hill’s size.  Either one of these guys would vastly improve the Browns offense.  The other option for the Browns would be to take a right tackle here and they could look at Stanford’s Jonathan Martin.

In round 2 the Browns seem destined to pick Oklahoma St. QB Brandon Weeden.  Weeden was a very productive college QB coming from a pass happy attack.  He is smart and accurate and his arm is plenty strong enough.  The knock on him is that he’ll be a 29 year old rookie and will likely have a shorter than normal career.  Regardless, the Browns should grab him and allow him to compete with Colt McCoy.  McCoy has had flashes so if this competition makes him better then great, or if Weeden flat out beats him for the job then also great.  Either way the Browns QB situation will be much better than in previous years with Weeden in the fold.

In round 3 the Browns will look for a right tackle or a pass rusher.  If CAL OT Mitchell Schwartz is still on the board he could be the choice.  He’s 6’5 320 lbs and powerful. He’s already a nasty run blocker but will need to work on his pass protection.  If Schwartz is gone the Browns could look for pass rushing help.  They did add Frostee Rucker in free agency but a young guy to grow old with Jabaal Sheard would be a great move.  They could look at Nebraska’s Jared Crick but a more likely target would be Boise St.’s Tyrone Crawford.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

Team Needs:  RB, CB, LB, S

Free Agent Additions: CB Ronde Barber (resigned), DE Michael Bennett (resigned), RB LeGarratte Blount (resigned), OT Demar Dotson, WR Vincent Jackson, OT Jamon Meredith, G Carl Nicks, DT Amobi Okoye, QB Dan Orlovsky, WR Preston Parker (resigned),

Free Agent Losses:  FS Tanard Jackson, QB Josh Johnson, OT James Lee, RB Kregg Lumpkin, WR Michael Spurlock

Round 1:
Potential Targets:
RB Trent Richardson, CB Morris Claiborne, OT Matt Kalil

Round 2:
Potential Targets:
OLB Lavonte David, RB Doug Martin, RB Lamar Miller, RB David Wilson, CB Janoris Jenkins, CB Trumaine Johnson, CB Josh Robinson

Round 3:
Potential Targets:
OLB Nigel Bradham, OLB Terrell Manning, OLB Sean Spence, RB LaMichael James, S Antonio Allen, S Markelle Martin

Plan of Attack:   The Buccaneers hold the fifth overall pick and wold love to see Alabama’s Trent Richardson available.  New head coach Greg Schiano wants a RB he can use as the feature back and while LeGarratte Blount has shown ability, he is a one trick power back.  Richardson is a complete three down player and can be that rare back who doesn’t come off the field.  The problem for the Bucs is that he is likely coming off the board one pick before they go on the clock so they’ll likely end up taking LSU CB Morris Claiborne.  The Bucs secondary is getting old and Ronde Barber is likely in his final season.  They also are rumored to be shopping Aqib Talib so a corner is needed early in this draft.  Claiborne is a top flight talent with long arms and supberb ball skills.  He could develop into a true shutdown corner.

If the Bucs get Claiborne in round 1, then they’ll target a RB in the second.  They’ll be choosing betweeen Boise St.’s Doug Martin, Va. Tech’s David Wilson, and Miami’s Lamar Miller.  There is a pretty good chance Doug Martin could be gone, so then the Bucs should look at David Wilson.  Wilson is a great all around back who is a superb pass catcher.  He is also explosive and has true home run ability.  If the Bucs think they can find a back later they may go with Nebraska OLB Lavonte David here.  The Buccaneers need another linebacker in their rotation and David is a solid tackler with good speed and range.

If the Buccaneers go CB, RB, as expected they look for an OLB or S here in the third.  The top option would be NC St.’s Terrell Manning.  Manning is a very  instinctive backer who can cover a ton of ground and has good size.  He does have some injury history so the medical on him will be very important.  They could also be interested in FSU’s Nigel Bradham who is a big hitter or Miami’s Sean Spence.  The team may look to add some depth at safety as well, and could look at rangy Antonio Allen from South Carolina or big hitting Markelle Martin from Okalhoma St.

Team Needs:  QB, G, CB, S

Free Agent Additions: DE Adam Carriker (resigned), LB London Fletcher (resigned), WR Pierre Garcon, DE Kedric Golston (resigned), CB Cedric Griffin, QB Rex Grossman (resigned), S Tanard Jackson, OT James Lee, G Kory Lichtensteiger, S Brandon Meriweather, C Will Montgomery (resigned), WR Josh Morgan

Free Agent Losses:  S Chris Horton, WR Donte Stallworth, S LaRon Landry

Round 1:
Potential Targets:
Robert Griffin III QB, Baylor

Round 2:
Potential Targets:
Pick used to move up to get RG3.

Round 3:
Potential Targets:
G Brandon Brooks, G Jeff Allen, G Joe Looney, G Brandon Washington, G Tony Bergstrom, CB Chase Minnifield, CB Josh Norman, CB Dwight Bentley, CB Jamell Fleming, S Markelle Martin, S Antonio Allen

Plan of Attack:  The Redskins originally held the 6th overall pick but gave the Rams a king’s ransom to move up to no.2 to get Robert Griffin III.  It was a hefty price to pay but it’ll be worth it.  Griffin gives the team a legitimate franchise QB and face of the organization.  Mike Shannahan loves mobile quaterbacks who can move the pocket and Griffin’s obscene amount of athleticism makes him an ideal fit.  He will excite the fanbase and could very well be in the running for Offensive Rookie of the Year.

The Redskins have some pretty glaring holes in their secondary and could look to add a corner or safety with their early third round pick.  They lost Chris Horton and LaRon Landry and are thin at safety.  They could look to replace the physicality they lost with Landry in Oklahoma St.’s Markelle Martin.  Martin is a physical player who will lay some big hits on receivers coming across the middle.   They also have issues on the interior of their offensive line and need to add a guard.  Lucky for them they should find value on the board when they go on the clock.  They would love to see either Illinois Jeff Allen or Miami Ohio’s Brandon Brooks fall to them.  Allen is a versatile lineman who could also play right and potentially left tackle.  Brooks is a big physical mauler who would open up wide lanes in the running game as well as allowing ample time for RGIII to make his reads.

Plan of Attack for the 2012 NFL Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars /nfl-draft-news/plan-of-attack-for-the-2012-nfl-draft-jacksonville-jaguars/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=plan-of-attack-for-the-2012-nfl-draft-jacksonville-jaguars /nfl-draft-news/plan-of-attack-for-the-2012-nfl-draft-jacksonville-jaguars/#comments Fri, 20 Apr 2012 21:05:15 +0000 Nik Edlund /?p=3009 Free agency is waning down and the Draft is just days away.

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

Team Needs:  DE, WR, S, CB, RB, OLB

Free Agent Additions: OLB Russell Allen, WR Lee Evans, QB Chad Henne, S Dwigh Lowery, DE Jeremy Mincey (resigned), DT CJ Mosley (resigned), WR Laurent Robinson, CB Aaron Ross, OT Guy Whimper (resigned)

Free Agent Losses:  DE Leger Douzable, TE Kyle Miller, QB David Garrard

Round 1:
Potential Targets:
DE Melvin Ingram, DE Quinton Coples, WR Justin Blackmon, CB Stephon Gilmore, DT Fletcher Cox, OT Riley Reiff, S Mark Barron

Round 2:

WR Rueben Randle, WR Alshon Jeffrey, WR Brian Quick, OLB Lavonte David, DE Chandler Jones, DE Vinny Curry, DE Andre Branch, S Harrison Smith, S Brandon Taylor, RB LaMichael James, RB Lamar Miller, RB David Wilson, CB Janoris Jenkins, CB Josh Robinson

Round 3:
Potential Targets:
WR Marvin McNutt, WR Keshawn Martin, WR Nick Toon, WR Ryan Broyles, OLB Nigel Bradham, OLB Terrell Manning, OLB Sean Spence, S Antonio Allen, S Markelle Martin, CB Chase Minnifield, CB Josh Norman

Plan of Attack:  The Jaguars have been rumored to be looking to trade down from the 7th overall pick but if they can’t, and end up staying put, they should be able to find a player who can help them in year one.  The most likely target for the team would be to take a pass rusher.  The Jaguars are usually at the bottom of the league when it comes to sacks and that has to change.  They could take versatile pass rusher Melivn Ingram from South Carolina.  Ingram can line up at defensive end, tackle, or even stand up as a linebacker, and rush the passer from any of them.  He has a great arsenal of pass rushing moves and is extremely quick and strong.  He doesn’t have the build  of a prototypical 4-3 end but if used right, should be an impact player in year one.

In round two the Jaguars should look for a pass catcher to help young Blaine Gabbert’s maturation.  They did sign Laurent Robinson in free agency, but if they force him to to be their no. 1 target they may end up regretting it.  They would love to see LSU’s Rueben Randle on the board, but he’ll likley be gone, so they’ll have to go with either South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffrey, Appalachian St.’s Brian Quick, or Illinois’ AJ Jenkins.  All of these guys have size and speed and have the potential to grow into starters.

Round three will be all about adding depth to some areas of the team that have become depleted.  They could  bring in an outside linebacker and could look at FSU’s big hitting Nigel Bradham.  They may look to add another player in their secondary and could look at a safety like Antonio Allen or a versatile corner like Chase Minnifield.  The Jaguars may also begin to think about getting an heir apparent to MJD, and could look at LaMichael James, Chris Polk, Isaiah Pead, or Bernard Pierce, as Rashad Jennings and Deji Karim haven’s shown much as backups during their days in Jacksonville.
