4-3 DE, 3-4 DE
6-4 265 lbs.
Arkansas

-Needs to work on his disengaging. He keeps blockers at bay with his arms, but he doesn’t use his hands after that. He will try to shuck and lunge if the RB is making a cut off of the blocker on him.

-Seems like he may be better suited for a 3-4 DE role but he is too skinny for that. Needs to go to a team where they can bulk him up for a permanent starter role but a team that is looking for a guy that can pin his ears back and rush the edge.

-Like I said earlier he does a good job rushing the edge without any real strong moves. When he is given the freedom to just attack the OT’s outside shoulder he shows exceptional quickness and good balance rounding the corner. Stays low and presents a small target for blockers to get their hands on.

-Seems too stiff and slow when they stand him up. He isn’t very flexible either which lets blockers get position on him, which he can’t get off of.

-I hate that the Razorbacks don’t use Bequette on every defensive snap. After the first couple of drives they use him as a pass rush specialist and rotator. To me that points to a lack of confidence or injury concerns. Possibly both.

-While he won’t overwhelm blockers with his strength, he does seem to have a knack for anchoring his position. Another sign that makes me like him as a possible 5 tech.

-Accelerates into contact with QBs and looks to knock out the ball without sacrificing technique. Exactly how you coach it up.

-Bequette’s sack numbers make you think you are going to be watching a high quality defensive end but I just don’t see the talent to match his production. He has a high motor when they let him pin his ears back and that may be his best attribute. A team looking to him to be a full time starter his rookie year will be disappointed unless the use a wide-nine system or if they think they can bulk him up to be a 5 tech. Late 3rd-Mid 4th round talent. Possible destinations: New England, Tennessee, Cleveland, Carolina, Buffalo, New Orleans.

Justin Blackmon NFL Draft | WR Oklahoma St. /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/justin-blackmon-nfl-draft-wr-oklahoma-st/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=justin-blackmon-nfl-draft-wr-oklahoma-st /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/justin-blackmon-nfl-draft-wr-oklahoma-st/#comments Tue, 13 Mar 2012 13:45:35 +0000 Will Lomas /?p=2648 Justin Blackmon
#1 WR
6-1 207 lbs.
Oklahoma State

-The two time Biletnikoff Award winner doesn’t have an elite frame or elite speed. What he does do very well is get off press coverage. He keeps hands off of him and runs through initial contract.

-Wasn’t asked to block very often and when he does block he is just going through the motions.

-Not a speed demon and probably won’t create elite separation with his speed in the NFL.

-Powerful runner after the catch, fights for YAC and runs through smaller tacklers.

-Oklahoma State really likes to try to get him on an island and just lob the ball to him. Not a bad strategy because he finds a way to get it most of the time, but it inflates his numbers.

-Great hands. He plucks the ball out of the air and does a good job protecting it.

-Uses his body to his advantage and boxes out DBs to get the ball. Very good goal line target.

-While Blackmon is the top outside receiver in this years class, he doesn’t stack up to the Greens and Johnsons of the past few years. His talent merits a top 16 pick but with the NFL being the pass happy league it is I wouldn’t be shocked to see him taken around pick number four. Possible destinations: St. Louis, Cleveland, Carolina, Washington, Jacksonville.

Joe Adams NFL Draft | WR, Arkansas /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/joe-adams-nfl-draft-wr-arkansas/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=joe-adams-nfl-draft-wr-arkansas /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/joe-adams-nfl-draft-wr-arkansas/#comments Mon, 12 Mar 2012 00:03:47 +0000 Will Lomas /?p=2633 Joe Adams
Slot WR
5-10 180 lbs.
Arkansas

-Doesn’t show tenacity when blocking downfield, but he does seal off DBs giving a lane to the RB. Mainly uses his upper body so he could be run over if he is matched against a stronger guy.

-Does a good job beating zone coverages, he either sits down in the hole, splits the seam, or gets behind the linebackers. Probable 3rd down target.

-Held his own against a bigger, stronger DB in Morris Claiborne in running and passing plays. Competitor.

-Does a good job coming back to the ball when a defender sets up behind him. Doesn’t wait for the ball to get to him because he knows he will get jarred.

-Very elusive once the ball gets to him. Always stays moving, wiggles around, he runs through arm tackles, Defenders struggle to mirror him when they meet head to head. Not sharp cuts like a Rueben Randle, but his ability to accelerate after the cuts make him hard to bring down.

-Definitely has versatility. He can play the slot and special teams very well, think Percy Harvin but a quarter-step slower.

-Doesn’t run as many routes as you would want, but he won’t often be asked to run too many routes for his position so teams may overlook this.

-Adams is a very good slot guy and can be big in a system with a deep threat that can stretch the zones out for him. His value is limited because of position and height but there is not reason why a WR needy team should pass on him after pick 60. Possible destinations: New York Giants, New England, New Orleans, San Francisco, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Washington, Miami.

Dre Kirkpatrick NFL Draft | CB, Alabama /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/dre-kirkpatrick-nfl-draft-cb-alabama/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dre-kirkpatrick-nfl-draft-cb-alabama /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/dre-kirkpatrick-nfl-draft-cb-alabama/#comments Thu, 08 Mar 2012 00:53:45 +0000 Will Lomas /?p=2579 Dre Kirkpatrick
LCB
6-3 192 lbs.
Alabama

-Excels when he gives WRs a five yard cushion. He does a good job closing that gap on slant routes, and stays tight with the WR on all other routes.

-He is active and physical down the field, which gets him in trouble sometimes.

-Often covers man to man with little to no safety help.

-Teams will need to see him press in private workouts because in big games Alabama preferred to keep him in off coverage.

-Aggressive in the run game but struggles to get off blocks.

-Obviously he was in a Nick Saban defense which does a very good job coaching up defensive backs so I think it is fair to say that Kirkpatrick’s football I.Q. is above average and it shows in his play. He often communicates with other DBs to make sure everyone is adjusted and in the right coverage.

-So good in man coverage that it lets the safeties behind him have the freedom to jump routes.

-Kirkpatrick would be the premier corner in this draft if not for Claiborne. Comparing the two I think Claiborne has more fluid hips and is a better press coverage guy, but other than that there isn’t a huge difference. Top 16 talent. Possible destinations: Redskins, Dallas, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, New England.

Brandon Thompson NFL Draft | DT, Clemson /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/brandon-thompson-nfl-draft-dt-clemson/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=brandon-thompson-nfl-draft-dt-clemson /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/brandon-thompson-nfl-draft-dt-clemson/#comments Tue, 06 Mar 2012 00:02:32 +0000 Will Lomas /?p=2548 Brandon Thompson
4-3 DT | 6-2 311 lbs. | Clemson

-Nice quickness for his size but definitely a 3 step burst guy. You can see him run out of energy and pull up.

-Has a great swim move, but he is also partial to the bulrush.

-Hits and drives through blockers. When he sees a misdirection play he holds up his block well then shucks it. Good recognition.

-Will make his money between the hashes, he is not someone who has the ability to chase down a ball carrier once they clear those marks. More of a disrupter than anything, there is nothing wrong with being a disrupter by the way, just a term.

-Stands up too often but makes up for this with strength and great hands. Very good anchor.

-Does a good job working down the line without giving cut back lanes on stretch plays.

-He has the versatility to move from nose to either 4-3 defensive tackle if a DC is sees an offensive lineman he wants to pick on.

-Thompson is fun to watch. He doesn’t posses the athleticism or frame to be a top 10 defensive tackle, but he still could get a look in the late first. Early second round talent. Possible destinations: Cleveland, Denver, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Carolina

Dontari Poe NFL Draft | DT, Memphis /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/dontari-poe-nfl-draft-dt-memphis/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=dontari-poe-nfl-draft-dt-memphis /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/dontari-poe-nfl-draft-dt-memphis/#comments Wed, 22 Feb 2012 00:09:02 +0000 Will Lomas /?p=2353 Name: Dontari Poe
Ideal Position-NT/1 tech
Measurements: 6-5 350 lbs.
School: Memphis

-In cased you missed it, those measurements are 6-5, 350 lbs. He is build well, doesn’t have a huge spare tire like some NT which is a by product of his dedication to the weight room. You can turn on film and instantly know where he is lined up.

-Obviously with that size he is hard to dig out of a hole when he stacks a blocker during a rush, but when he wants to move he can. Not an elite pass rusher by any standards, but he is quick enough to surprise a center of the snap.

-Good hand placement, not just a bull rusher like some heavier NTs.

-Good “Pop” when he takes on a blocker, pullers seem scared to hit him.

-Gets cut A LOT, put does a good job still affecting the play. That could mean making sure he lunges as he is falling, pushing down the lineman that tried to cut him, or getting back up and pursuing. Great effort.

-Played in a very weak conference, which will make scouts question how he can transition to the NFL.

-He will burst through the line without knowing where the ball is which will hurt him when playing the draw and the screen.

-All in all he should go in the first 48 picks. I can see where some teams would want to stay away because right now he is more upside than NFL ready, but the other side of the coin is that a NT with his potential could easily find a home in the late first round.  Something I didn’t mention is that he has played DT in the 4-3 and DE/DT in the 3-4 scheme. That versatility could entice some teams in this weak DT class. Possible destinations: Carolina, Denver, Houston, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis

Zach Brown NFL Draft | LB, North Carolina /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/zach-brown-nfl-draft-lb-north-carolina/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=zach-brown-nfl-draft-lb-north-carolina /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/zach-brown-nfl-draft-lb-north-carolina/#comments Tue, 21 Feb 2012 14:05:30 +0000 Will Lomas /?p=2319 Name: Zach Brown
Ideal Position: WLB
Measurements: 6-2 230 lbs.
School: UNC

-The first thing to notice about Zach Brown is his speed. It is rumored that he will run in the low 4.4s to middle 4.3s at the combine, which will really turn heads.

-His upside as a cover LB is unlimited. He can cover any RB or TE that he is matched up with and his height/speed combination could really be utilized in blitz packages where he drops to cover a WR and a DB blitzes.

-He takes false steps on play action passes that he usually can get away with in college because of his speed. If a defensive coach or a veteran can help him fix that, then he could make even more plays at or behind the LoS.

-He does a good job flipping his hips and driving on balls in the flats.

-Does not finish tackles well. He tries to make up for his strength differential by going for bigger hits, will miss on occasion.

-Prefers to slip blocks instead of using his strength or moves. If a team wants to rush him off the edge they will need to coach him up or he will get shut down after contact.

-Gets caught looking at the ball carrier and he misses the blocker coming at him which gets him pushed out of the play.

-Brown’s exceptional athleticism and potential will likely earn him a spot in the mid first to mid second round range depending on his combine numbers. Possible destinations: Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Tennessee, Jets, Cleveland

Jeff Allen NFL Draft | Guard, Illinois /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/jeff-allen-nfl-draft-guard-illinois/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=jeff-allen-nfl-draft-guard-illinois /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/jeff-allen-nfl-draft-guard-illinois/#comments Mon, 20 Feb 2012 14:58:36 +0000 Will Lomas /?p=2297 Jeff Allen | Guard
6-4 315 lbs.
Illinois

-I believe Allen can be a very solid guard, here is my break down of the 9 times Allen faced probable 1st round pick in DT Devon Still:
1. Still is hooked and driven back (Q1 11:25)
2. Great down block by Allen (1st Q :50 sec left)
3. hooked again (2nd 6:22)
4. washed down when he didn’t read his blocks (2nd 1:27)
5. quick pass, not enough time to judge but Still looked lethargic (Q3 5:28)
6. hooked driven back 3-4 yards (Q3 1:50)
7. Still beats down block bad offensive play call (Q4 13:47)
8. Hooked AGAIN (Q4  13:06)
9. Still hooked for a fifth and final time (Q4 6:20)

-For those who don’t know, for a OT to hook-block a DT, it takes a lot of agility and quickness. After you get in front of the DT, you then have to have a very strong base and good hand placement to open up a hole for the RB. It is a tough block and to get hooked 5 times in one game and not have an answer for it either means the DT is weak (which is not true based on previous film of Still) or the offensive lineman is very skilled.

-Enough of the long points, bullet point time. Very solid in anchoring pass rushers at OT.

-Does a good job driving through defensive lineman on down blocks.

-Good finisher, always trying to put his man in the ground

-Shows a good quickness out of his stance and will be a good matchup against quicker DTs.

-Has a good frame and carries his weight well. Could probably get to 325 and still be one of the quicker OGs in the league.

-Overall I really like Allen in the 3rd -4th round range. Most scouts have him lower, but I can see him starting on a OG needy team next year while also being available as a back-up OT. Possible destinations: Tennessee, Dallas, Chicago, Kansas City, Cincinnati, San Diego, Pittsburgh.

Jared Crick NFL Draft | DE Nebraska /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/jared-crick-nfl-draft-de-nebraska/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=jared-crick-nfl-draft-de-nebraska /2012-nfl-draft-player-profiles/jared-crick-nfl-draft-de-nebraska/#comments Sun, 19 Feb 2012 19:48:21 +0000 Will Lomas /?p=2289 Jared Crick
3-4 DE/4-3 DT
6-4 285 lbs.
Nebraska

-Crick was slated as a top 10 pick this year until he sustained a pec injury early this year. He is famous for playing next to Suh in his dominant senior campaign, but he has stood out without Suh as well.

-He played in 36 games so I don’t see injury issues in his future

-He has great production over his career, 20 sacks, 25+ QB pressures 30+ TFLs. He has been very steady with key defensive loses every year.

-Does a great job extending and keeping blockers off of him.

-Relentless effort and motor. If he misses or takes a bad angle in the backfield he doesn’t stop his feet, he turns and tries again.

-Very active around the line, if he gets double teamed (which he often does in their 4-3 scheme) he will weave in and out to try to separate the double team or find a hole in the protection. Does a great job confusing offensive lineman.

-Very good closer once he gets in the backfield. Hits his top gear quick.

-After watching his film, Crick is quickly becoming one of my favorite DL this year. In a year where the DT class isn’t very top heavy, he has become somewhat of a sleeper and will need good interviews, weigh-ins, etc. to remind everyone that he is a top 15 talent. Mid 1st-early 2nd pick. Possible destinations: Carolina, Denver, Green Bay, Indianapolis, New Orleans.
