Tyler Eifert
Tight End
6’6” 250 lbs.
Notre Dame
-Eifert is a decent inline blocker, but he lacks any sort of initial punch. Obviously he moves well laterally and has nice footwork, but occasionally he will let defensive ends come through the “back door” when he is trying to reach block them.
-Eifert is hard to game plan against, mainly because he knows how to take what you give him against zone coverage. In man coverage, he is too speedy for linebackers while being too tall for most defensive backs.
-Not very competitive during the catch. Several times on film you can see defenders get their hands on balls he could have easily plucked away.
-He has experience all over the field. Against Pittsburgh, Eifert played as an inline tight end, an inside receiver, and an outside receiver. Primarily though he should be an inline TE with the ability to motion outside.
-This kid lives by the spectacular catch. For every drop or pass batted away, he has a catch that he either lays out for, or one that was thrown behind him and high.
-For a tight end that has always had Michael Floyd on the outside, it will be interesting to see how he does as the primary pass-catcher.
-During the 2011 season Eifert had a whopping 63 catches, which according to ESPN was the most among tight ends. Keep in mind that not only was he not the first read for Notre Dame, but he topped the charts when players like Coby Fleener, Orson Charles, and Dwayne Allen were in their prime.
-Eifert may not have elite speed and he may lack power in the blocking game, but he has a good bit of talent and if he can find a home on a team with a solid number one already in place he could see playing time early in the NFL.
