Round 1 Recap

Here’s a quick review of round 1, listing some surprises, best values, and biggest reaches.

BIGGEST SURPRISE
This has to go to Bruce Irvin OLB, at 15 to the Seahawks.  Yes Irvin is an expolosive pass rusher but was seen as a better fit in a 3-4 and has some off the field issues.

BEST VALUE
The Steelers got a great value when they found Stanford guard David DeCastro available to them with the 24th overall pick.  DeCastro was considered by many to be a top 15 pick but slipped to the Steelers who gladly snapped him up.

BIGGEST REACH
Brandon Weeden QB, Oklahoma St.
Not sure the Brown really had to go with Weeden here.  I didn’t see another team between now an 37 that would take the aged passer.  They could still have gotten him and could have gotten a receiver here like Stephen Hill or Rueben Randle.

BEST START
New England gets a mention with Chandler Jones and Dont’a Hightower but this goes to the Minnesota Vikings.  Spielman finagled the Browns to give them 3 extra picks and then took Matt Kalil at four. They then got agressive and moved up to address their biggest need in safety by grabbing Notre Dame’s Harrison Smith.

BEST STILL AVAILABLE
WR Stephen Hill, WR Rueben Randle, C Peter Konz, DT Jerel Worthy, G Cordy Glenn, OT Jonathan Martin, CB Janoris Jenkins, TE Coby Fleener, DE/OLB Andre Branch, DT Devon Still
