Plan of Attack for the 2012 NFL Draft: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Free agency is waning down and the Draft is just hours away.  It’s time to sit down and go over every teams free agent acquisitions and losses, along with their team needs.   Using that information  we will figure out a Plan of Attack for the 2012 Draft for each team.  We’ll start with the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants and work our way down one day at a time, to the Indianapolis Colts and the first overall pick.

Round 3:
Potential Targets:
OLB Nigel Bradham, OLB Terrell Manning, OLB Sean Spence, RB LaMichael James, S Antonio Allen, S Markelle Martin

Plan of Attack:   The Buccaneers hold the fifth overall pick and wold love to see Alabama’s Trent Richardson available.  New head coach Greg Schiano wants a RB he can use as the feature back and while LeGarratte Blount has shown ability, he is a one trick power back.  Richardson is a complete three down player and can be that rare back who doesn’t come off the field.  The problem for the Bucs is that he is likely coming off the board one pick before they go on the clock so they’ll likely end up taking LSU CB Morris Claiborne.  The Bucs secondary is getting old and Ronde Barber is likely in his final season.  They also are rumored to be shopping Aqib Talib so a corner is needed early in this draft.  Claiborne is a top flight talent with long arms and supberb ball skills.  He could develop into a true shutdown corner.

If the Bucs get Claiborne in round 1, then they’ll target a RB in the second.  They’ll be choosing betweeen Boise St.’s Doug Martin, Va. Tech’s David Wilson, and Miami’s Lamar Miller.  There is a pretty good chance Doug Martin could be gone, so then the Bucs should look at David Wilson.  Wilson is a great all around back who is a superb pass catcher.  He is also explosive and has true home run ability.  If the Bucs think they can find a back later they may go with Nebraska OLB Lavonte David here.  The Buccaneers need another linebacker in their rotation and David is a solid tackler with good speed and range.

If the Buccaneers go CB, RB, as expected they look for an OLB or S here in the third.  The top option would be NC St.’s Terrell Manning.  Manning is a very  instinctive backer who can cover a ton of ground and has good size.  He does have some injury history so the medical on him will be very important.  They could also be interested in FSU’s Nigel Bradham who is a big hitter or Miami’s Sean Spence.  The team may look to add some depth at safety as well, and could look at rangy Antonio Allen from South Carolina or big hitting Markelle Martin from Okalhoma St.
