Plan of Attack for the 2012 NFL Draft: New York Giants

Free agency is waning down and we are approaching April at  a rapid pace.  It’s time to sit down and go over every teams free agent acquisitions and losses, along with their team needs.   Using that information  we will figure out a Plan of Attack for the 2012 Draft for each team.  We’ll start with the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants and work our way down one day at a time, to the Indianapolis Colts and the first overall pick.

Plan of Attack: The Giants have some clearly defined needs heading into this draft but where they are picking at the end of round one may not find proper value.   They could have their choice of tight end with Coby Fleener being the clear option, but may not go that route with the recent signing of Martellus Bennett.  They’d love to find their middle linebacker of the future but it looks very unlikley that Dont’a Hightower will last to the 32nd pick and there is no other MLB worth taking there.  The Giants offensive line also needs an injection of youth but again the cupboard could be bare, with Mike Adams and Jonathan Martin almost assuredly being drafted sooner.  If they felt they absolutely had to go tackle, they could reach a little for Ole Miss’ Bobby Massie at this point.   The Giants could look to land a running back in round 1, to take some wear off the already fragile Ahamad Bradshaw.  It’s very likely they could choose from David Wilson, Lamar Miller, and Doug Martin.  They may be better off just taking the best player available, and if they do that, they could nab a receiver like Rueben Randle or add to their already impressive defensive line with a tackle like Devon Still or Jerel Worthy.

If the Giants end up taking B.P.A. in round 1, they will likely address a need with their second  round choice.  They would likely look to the offensive line first and possibly take a guard like Kevin Zeitler if he slid a bit.  Some tackles that could be available would be FSU’s Zebrie Sanders or even Cal’s Mitchell Schwartz.  They may also grab a tight end here and could take a chance on Orson Charles. The other option would be to pounce on LB Mychal Kendricks if he were still on the board.  He would be a speedy upgrade to the middle of their defense.

The Giants will continue to attack a need in round 3 and could find a solid corner for them still on the board.  Options possibly available would be Coastal Carolina’s Josh Norman or even Oklahoma’s Jamel Fleming.  If they don’t get their offensive tackle in round 2, then they could look at Nate Potter from Boise St. here or Brandon Mosely from Auburn.  Brandon Brooks, the big guard from Miami Ohio could still be around and he’d be a very good value at the end of round 3.
