Free agency is waning down and the Draft is just days away. It’s time to sit down and go over every teams free agent acquisitions and losses, along with their team needs. Using that information we will figure out a Plan of Attack for the 2012 Draft for each team. Plan of Attack: The Chiefs gave themselves some flexibility with their first round pick due to the moves they made in free agency. They signed Stanford Routt knowing they’d lose Brandon Carr, they acquired OT Eric Winston, and added depth at TE with Kevin Boss. So they are not locked into any one position when they are on the clock. They could solidify their offensive line by taking Stanford guard David DeCastro. He is one of the better guard prospects to come out in years, and would give the Chiefs one of the best young offensive lines in the league. The team doesn’t seem to be sold on Matt Cassell as their long term answer at QB, and could very well grab Ryan Tannehill if he were to slide. They do have a need at ILB and could consider Boston College’s Luke Kuechly. Kuechly is very athletic for an ILB and is one of the best tacklers to come around in years. The last route the Cheifs could go would be to address their need at NT and take Memphis’ Dontari Poe. There are a ton of mixed reviews on Poe as he just doesn’t show up on tape. Regardless, the Chiefs could be smitten with his upside, and take him at 11, risk be damned.
For the sake of this article let’ say the Cheifs grab Kuechly at 11. They could then find a very good guard waiting for them in round two. Wisconsin’s Kevin Zeitler would be a great choice. The Badgers have been producing quality offensive lineman by the bushel lately and Zeitler would continue that streak. He is a physical blocker with good movement skills. He isn’t in David DeCastro’s class but would solidify that offensive line just the same. The Chiefs could also look for a nose here and could consider Washington’s Alameda Ta’Amu. He is a huge man who could also play end in the Chiefs 3-4. A quarterback could also tempt the team, and they could look at Brandon Weeden or Kirk Cousins.
If the Chiefs go linebacker and then guard, then round 3 could be about finding that nose tackle. They would be interested in Alabama’s Josh Chapman or Michigan’s Mike Martin. Chapman is coming off a knee injury but he is thickly built, has experience playing in the best division in college football, and is a hard worker. If the Chiefs are scared off by Chapman’s injuries or he is off the board, they could look at a quarterback. Nick Foles has his supporters and his detractors but the Cheifs could be willing to take a shot at him in the third. The same could be said for Arizona St.’s Brock Osweiler. Some have him ranked as a late first, others wouldn’t touch him until the fifth. Osweiler is a tall, lanky ball slinger who is suprisingly atheltic. Either one of these guys could come in and compete first with Stanzi and Quinn for the backup gig, and then over time be groomed to be the starter.
