Plan of Attack for the 2012 NFL Draft: Houston Texans

Free agency is waning down and we are approaching April at  a rapid pace.  It’s time to sit down and go over every teams free agent acquisitions and losses, along with their team needs.   Using that information  we will figure out a Plan of Attack for the 2012 Draft for each team.  We’ll start with the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants and work our way down one day at a time, to the Indianapolis Colts and the first overall pick.

Round 3:

WR Juron Criner, WR AJ Jenkins, WR Joe “The Jet” Adams, WR Jarius Wright, NT Josh Chapman, NT Mike Martin, OLB Bruce Irvin, OLB Shea McClellin, S Philip Thomas, S Antonio Allen

Plan of Attack:  The Texans will likely look for a receiver early and then target some defensive help in this draft.  How the Draft falls will obviously determine which route they go.  Wide receiver has to be the primary target in round one and with the 26th pick there is a chance Kendall Wright or Stephen Hill could still be on the board.  Either of these guys would provide a field stretching option opposite Andre Johnson.  If there is an early run on receivers and neither of those guys are available, the Texans could look for a pass rusher at this point.  USC’s Nick Perry, Illinois’ Whitney Mercilus, or Clemson’s Andre Branch could all be options.

Assuming the Texans land a receiver in round 1, they’ll likely look for some defensive help in the second.  A pass rusher to add depth after the loss of Mario Williams could sought after and Oklahoma’s Ronnell Lewis is one possible option.  They could also look for secondary help and target a safety like LSU’ Brandon Taylor.  They also need a big anchor for their 3-4 and Washington’s Alameda Ta’Amu could be their man.  He is huge and very athletic for his size.  He could line up at nose or at end, and would be a valuable commodity to this defense.

In round 3 the Texans could then look for a pass rusher and could find West Virginia’s Bruce Irvin on the board.  Irvin has some off the field baggage, but is very quick off the edge and should be good for a handful of sacks and pressures in his inagural season.  Other options would be safety if they’ve already landed their nose, and Philip Thomas from Syracuse could be the choice.  If they haven’t got their nose tackle yet then certainly Michigan’s Mike Martin or Alabama’s Josh Chapman would be targets here.
