Plan of Attack: The Cowboys hold the 14th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and all their offseason moves point in one direction for that pick…safety. They added a big time corner in Brandon Carr, added some help at guard with Nate Livings and Bernadeau, and even added a linebacker in Dan Connor. The only major area left to address is safety. They are expecting Alabama’s Mark Barron to be there and by all accounts he should be. Barron is a solid all around safety with good speed, range, tackling ability, and above average ball skills. He has some injury concerns coming off that double hernia surgery, but would really shore up the Cowboys secondary. If he’s gone, then the team could look at DE or NT and are supposedly high on Memphis’ Dontari Poe.
The Cowboys did add Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau at guard in free agency, but neither one is making the Pro Bowl anytime soon. Round 2 would be a great spot to land a guard who can be brought along slowly and then unleash hell on opponents late in ’12 or early in 2013. Wisconsin’s Kevin Zeitler would be the top target. Wisconsin has a great track record of producing quality NFL offensive lineman and Zeitler is a mauler who should keep that trend going. Kelechi Osemele, Amini Silatolu, and Jeff Allen would be some other players the team could look at. If the Boys don’t roll with a guard in the second, then they may be looking to add a defensive lineman. A couple of guys who would fit nicely in their 3-4 would be Nebraska’s Jared Crick or Washington’s Alameda Ta’Amu. Ta’Amu is especially intriguing as he could play the five technique or line up at nose guard in their 3-4 front.
In round 3 the Cowboys are a little harder to predict as they could go a multitude of ways. Assuming they’ve landed a safety and guard in the first two rounds they could look at a wide receiver here. They lost Laurent Robinson in free agency and are sound at the position with Dez Bryant and Miles Austin, but they could use a slot guy. Oklahoma’s Ryan Broyles would be a nice pick up. He’d be a second round choice if it wasn’t for a mid-season ACL injury. He is a quick twitch receiver with great hands and has a knack for finding open zones in defenses. He’d give Tony Romo another nice chain moving target. Joe “The Jet” Adams from Arkansas would also fill this role nicely. The team also lost TE Martellus Bennett and could look at adding depth with either Georgia’s Orson Charles, or Missouri’s Michael Egnew. 3-4 teams are always looking for pass rushers so that can’t be ruled out. The Cowboys could also choose a big beefy defensive tackle to play nose for them and could have Alabama’s Josh Chapman or Michigan’s Mike Martin in mind here.
