Plan of Attack
The Ravens would absolutely be thrilled if Dont’a Hightower fell to them at the 29th overall pick. He is very athletic and versatile for an inside backer and would be an ideal replacement for Ray Lewis. Unfortunately for the Ravens, he’ll likely be off the board. If that is the case they will look at upgrading their offensive line. They could look at a left tackle and there is an outside chance Jonathan Martin or Mike Adams could be around. Either one would be an ideal replacement for Bryant McKinnie. If both are gone they could then look at Wisconsin guard/center Peter Konz. They did sign Matt Birk for a couple more years, and if he’s still performing at an acceptable level, they can have Konz replace Ben Grubbs’ guard spot until Birk retires. The other option would be to look at a safety and Notre Dame’s Harrison Smith could be the man they target.
If the Ravens land an offensive lineman in round 1, they will look for some defensive help in the second round. They would be very tempted to take CAL ILB Mychal Kendricks. Kendricks has blazing speed and is a sound tackler. He could learn from Ray Lewis for a season and then take over the reigns in year two. Even if Kendricks is avaialable the Ravens almost have to take a safety here due to lack of depth and old age at the position. LSU’s Brandon Taylor or Antonio Allen from South Carolina could both be options, and would likely be forced into action early in their NFL careers.
In round 3 the Ravens could target a wide receiver that can play in the slot. Ryan Broyles is flying under the radar a bit after suffering an ACL injury last fall. He’s a quick receiver with good hands and would be an excellent no.3/slot option with Boldin and field stretching Torrey Smith on the outside. If the Ravens haven’t landed an ILB at this point Audie Cole could be their choice, or if they address the secondary here, S Geroge Iloka, or a corner like Josh Norman could be the pick. If they do take a tackle in round one they may go back to upgrading their offensive line with a guard and names to keep an eye on would be Joe Looney, and Brandon Brooks.
