Name: Quinton Coples
Ideal position 4-3 DE, 3-4 DT/DE
Measurements: 6-6 285 lbs.
School: UNC
-Coples is a huge boom or bust prospect right now. He is undeniably one of the most athletic players in this draft but his motor and effort are under fire. Watching him during the season he seemed almost uninterested, but this will be my first full breakdown on him.
-Good not great disengaging techniques. Does a good job extending and going around the OTs outside shoulder. Would like to see a more consistent inside rip move to keeps OTs off balance.
-Gets way to deep when he goes off the edge and is not much of a threat if you have an OT with quick feet. Slow and takes bad angles when closing. Also, when he is stopped, he doesn’t get his long arms up as much as you would like.
-Does a good job stretching the line, but doesn’t stay low and shed the block like you want. Also, he gets caught looking in the backfield instead of reading his blocks.
-Generally slow on his spin move, but at the senior bowl he showed that when he really wants to pull that move off, he can. With his spin 2.0 he can really get off of OTs and it will be interesting to see if he can keep that up at the next level or if he will revert back to the original slow spin.
-Versatility is one of Coples best aspects. Even though he may not always be flashy, with some coaching he could play every position on the DL (in both schemes) except for NT. He has the strength, length, and power to be moved around to find his best match up.
-When double-teamed, he does a good job holding his ground and keeping either lineman from going to the next level. Not a flashy quality but a very important one.
-When motivated, Coples is a stud. When he is in his zone the game is in slow motion for him meaning he sees where the ball is going and how he is going to get blocked, figures out a plan, and executes all in a matter of seconds. As far as talent and upside goes he is top 5, but with all the bad tape this year it may scare teams off and drop him into the teens or twenties. Needs to go to a good situation and good coaching staff. Projected top 10 pick. Possible destinations: Miami, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Chicago, Tennessee, Carolina.
